Introduction
It's possible to make a lot of big and small trips in the vincinity of Methoni. There are a lot of historical sites, beautiful villages and small beaches. Below are some suggestions. For more information you can also check: Greece Travel, Peloponnesos.
At less than one hour from Methoni:
- Voidoikilia. This bay supposedly has the most beautiful beaches in the world. The area inland are protected wetlands, where many birds breed.
- Koroni. Methoni's twin city. Koroni has a monastary that rises high above the sea, with a beautiful view across the blue sea; besides the monastary Koroni has a boulevard with lots of little restaurants where you can enjoy something to eat or a cold drink.
- Pylos. A cozy little city with a beautiful "platia" (town square) with a view towards the harbour. Under the ancient tree, one can enjoy the Greek coffee, or a frappé. There is also a castle where you can enjoy a nice walk.
A bit further away:
- Kalamata. A real Greek province city with its very own atmosphere. Kalamata also has a large boulevard with many places to eat and drink.
- Mani. Across the bay, opposite to Koroni one can see the high mountaintops of this rugged country. It is known for its ancient towers where savages used to live. Stoupa is a nice little bathing resort. Further south the landscape is wild and untamed. Here you will also find the caves of Dirou, that are certainly worth a visit!
- Mistras. This outstretched Byzanthian city in ruins lies at short distance from Sparta. It's just one of the many many attractions from ancient Greece.
